About The Stone Spa
Our Mission
The Stone Spa was born from years of cleaning family memorials, battling the elements of time and natural processes with environmentally friendly practices. When the elements began winning, it became necessary to increase my level of intervention. To ensure these cherished memorials are preserved as close to perpetuity as possible, I expanded my knowledge, skills and materials in alignment with the National Park Service’s National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. Much like our skin, each stone has unique features and individualized needs which must be considered. I would be honored to provide your memorials the bespoke spa treatments they require.
core practices
Preservation Above Speed
Many stones have been irreparably damaged by well-meaning people using harsh chemicals, tools, and methods. While cleaning does result from the preservation activities we perform, our number one priority is preservation to ensure the stone lasts as long as possible. Our biologic cleaner continues to work over time, allowing for a gentler and more thorough cleaning and effective stone treatments. The solution is approved for use by the Department of Veteran's Affairs and the National Park Service, preserving many of our nation's most precious treasures.
Do No Harm
Stones can become brittle over time, and this is not always immediately obvious. In our preservation efforts, we strive to do no harm and always recommend the gentlest treatments for the stone to meet its needs. We will not perform treatments ahead of freezing weather if the rinsed stone will not have enough time to dry thoroughly before the temperature drops. During our stone treatments, we use only gentle tools and apply gentle pressure. Only reverse osmosis and deionized water will be used on the stones to avoid leaving any deposits within the stone. For unstable stones, we will not scrub; however, surface biologic treatments for memorial preservation may be possible on a case-by-case basis.
Preserving the Sanctity of the Space
To preserve the sanctity of the space and respect visitors, we only use manual practices during our treatments. We will never use powered or pressurized equipment for stone treatments, and we will refrain from using electronics or phones while on site.

general considerations
Things to Know Before Scheduling Your Stone Treatment
- We are not trained to perform any repairs on stones and do not offer this service.
- Removing biological growth from stones is a process that may take time, and during this period, stones may go through an 'ugly duckling' stage. As we treat the surface layers, the layers beneath become visible, revealing differing shades of color. The biological solution we use works over time to penetrate deep into the stone and lift these staining organisms.
- This solution works best under specific temperature and humidity conditions; for optimal results, we will schedule treatments within these parameters.
- Some heavily stained stones may require additional treatments; however, all stones are recommended to receive a follow-up spray of the biological solution once a year for continued memorial preservation.
- Our service prices are based on stone size and the degree of treatment needed (with some general pricing guides offered below).
- We currently serve eastern NC, but if you need services in another area, please contact us for potential options.
- Discounts are available for multiple stones in the same cemetery.
- Veteran stone treatments are always free; please contact us for availability.
